The Marvel Cinematic Universe has big plans for the future. To keep it all straight, we've laid out the next few years' worth of Marvel Studios films, which will take you through all of the official titles announced for Phase 3.
The Avengers: Infinity War - May 4, 2018
The third Avengers story will apparently be so huge that Marvel has to split it in two movies - the first of which hits theaters in summer 2018 (though they won't exactly be "Part 1" and "Part 2" according to our most up-to-date intel). Are the Avengers ready to face off against Thanos? Well, they better be, because the Mad Titan (Josh Brolin) is coming, and he is just aching to get his hands on all of the mystical Infinity Stones - a collection of ingots that give tremendous power to those who can properly possess and contain them. This includes The Space Stone, The Power Stone, The Reality Stone, The Mind Stone, The Time Stone and The Soul Stone.
Written and directed by the team from Captain America: The Winter Solider and Captain America: Civil War, The Avengers: Infinity War will feature basically every character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which should provide quite the narrative challenge. It's all been building to this! Check out the latest news on The Avengers: Infinity War HERE.
Ant-Man And The Wasp - July 6, 2018
For a long time, it looked like Marvel Studios didn't have a ton of confidence in a sequel to Ant-Man, but things have changed in a significant way. The company once again altered their lineup of films in Phase 3 in order to fit Ant-Man And The Wasp - a direct sequel to Peyton Reed's Ant-Man that will retain its director.
Ant-Man And The Wasp will not only feature the return of Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), Michael Pena (Luis), and Judy Greer (Maggie), but it's also been revealed that new additions include Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne, Randall Park as Jimmy Woo, Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster, Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch, and Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost. It's been rumored that the film will not only see the adventures of the modern versions of the titular heroes, but also feature plenty of flashbacks with young Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne. Captain Marvel - March 8, 2019
Though originally meant to drop in late 2018, the anticipated Captain Marvel film is now scheduled to be released as the first Marvel Studios film of 2019. The blockbuster will center on Marvelcharacter Carol Danvers in what's said to be a very earthbound adventure (though her powers are "in the cosmic realm," having come from the alien race known as the Kree). It's also been confirmed that the movie will be an origin story for the titular character, will co-star Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, will be set in the 1990s, and will be the first in the franchise to specifically feature the aliens known as the Skrulls.
According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, fans shouldn't expect to see Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (played by Oscar winner Brie Larson) until her solo film in 2019, so don't get your hopes up about her playing a key role in The Avengers: Infinity War. It isn't clear exactly how the story will be affected by the Avengers storyline, but that's something we're excited to see revealed on the big screen. Untitled Avengers: Infinity War Sequel - May 3, 2019
It won't be until one full year later that fans will get to see the end of The Avengers: Infinity War, and we expect to be foaming at the mouth by May 3, 2019. As little as we know about the events that will unfold in the first Avengers movie in Phase 3, we know even less about where the untitled sequel will go, as it will depend on where the first half of the story leaves the heroes in their battle against Thanos.
How will Earth's Mightiest Heroes manage to fight an alien who winds up possessing the powers of a god? It certainly seems like an impossible task, but stopping the Chitauri Invasion and the rise of Ultron could have been described the same way. We can't wait to see what Joe and Anthony Russo and Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely do with this one. Find the most recent updates on the Untitled Avengers: Infinity War Sequel HERE.
Here are the Phase 3 movies that we've already seen:
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Doctor Strange (2016)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Black Panther (2018)
Doctor Strange (2016)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Black Panther (2018)
Spider-Man 2 - July 5, 2019
It won't be called Spider-Man 2. Nor will it still use Homecoming in its title, though it likely instead will reflect something that has to do with Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) Junior year of high school. But Marvel Studios has dated the second Sony/Marvel team up movie in Spidey's corner of the MCU, and Marvel President Kevin Feige has confirmed that we will see the ramifications of Avengers 4 through Peter's eyes. Which, alone, sounds fascinating.
On top of that, there are a number of threads that can be picked up by this Spider-Man sequel. Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) knows her nephew's secret identity. Peter likely had a turn at being an Avenger... heck, he might be a full-fledged team member by the time we reach Spider-Man 2. And there was the tease of a villain in The Scorpion (Michael Mando) which might pay off in this installment. We have a release date, and the possible start of Marvel's Phase 4 (if they call it that). More details as they arrive will be posted here.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - 2020
The second feature in the proposed Marvel Phase 4 is likely going to be the only other title that has been announced at this point: James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. We don't have an exact release date on it yet, but we know is that Gunn is working on the screenplay and the director recently revealed the movie will be out in 2020. Because the film is in some state of development, we're penciling it into the "next" slot after Spider-Man in 2019, but until we get an exact date another movie may come up in between.
James Gunn has also said that his next sequel in the Guardians franchise will bring an end to the story of THIS version of the Guardians team. That includes Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel). But it does not mean it's the last Guardians film... or even Gunn's last Marvel film -- he seems to have a lot of ideas that could be explored. If I had to guess, I'd put Guardians 3 down for May 1, 2020, but that's pure speculation, so we'll see how this plays out.
